Dave Buchanan

Born in Arbroath, educated at Arbroath High School and St Andrews University.

Taught Classics and Computing at Douglas Ewart High School, Newton Stewart from 1968 to 2001.

Co-founded Newton Stewart Community Players (later Newton Stewart Players) in 1976.

From 1981-86 wrote a suite of six pantomimes (Aladdin, Ali Baba, Babes in the Wood, Cinderella, Dick Whittington and Jack & the Beanstalk), which he produced for the Players and acted in.

In the nineties Dave Buchanan was an active member of Newton Stewart Operatic Society and Birchvale Players, and in the noughties of Dunfermline Gilbert & Sullivan Society and Aberdour Players.

In 1995 the six pantos were published by Pedersen Press of Cumbernauld, but he launched his own company five years later as Spotlight Publications, with two contributing writers, the late Mark Rees and himself.

At its height Spotlight employed fifty four writers, and published eighty pantomimes, some of which were performed all over the British Isles, in the USA, Canada and Australia. The company closed in October 2021.
